Blue Botryoidal Hemimorphite
Wenshan, Yunnan Province, China
£750
Description
A substantial natural Hemimorphite specimen with vivid sky-blue botryoidal growth, contrasting pale mineral bands and extensive microcrystalline texture.
This large Hemimorphite specimen is dominated by rounded botryoidal formations ranging from fine bead-like coverage to broader clustered growth. The colour varies naturally from saturated turquoise and sky blue to softer blue-green tones across the display surface.
A pale, near-white mineralised band runs vertically through the principal face, creating strong natural contrast and dividing areas of different texture and colour intensity. Small cavities, layered growth and sparkling microcrystalline surfaces add detail when the specimen is viewed closely or under changing light.
The reverse exposes the natural host matrix and shows the thickness of the blue mineralised layer around the edge. At 2.360 kg, the piece has the scale and visual presence expected of a substantial cabinet specimen.
Locality: supplied as Hemimorphite from the Wenshan area of Yunnan Province, China. The accompanying Avalon specimen card is included.
Handling and care: support the specimen from its solid matrix. Keep it dry, avoid chemical cleaners and do not apply pressure to delicate mineralised edges.
The rounded, botryoidal growth described here is an aggregate habit: many small crystals contribute to a larger curved surface. It offers a different kind of mineral display to a group of sharply pointed crystals. The adjoining rounded areas, recesses and changes in surface texture help bring out the three-dimensional form.
Hemimorphite is a hydrated zinc silicate, usually formed as a secondary mineral in the oxidised parts of zinc deposits. It can develop thin crystals, fans and radiating groups, or rounded botryoidal surfaces. These different habits explain why two specimens of the same mineral can have such different appearances and display textures.
The name relates to a difference in form at opposite ends of its crystals. In an aggregate, however, the broader pattern of growth may be the more obvious feature. Rounded surfaces, fine sparkle and the relationship between the coloured material and its host can all contribute to its character. The recorded form of this particular piece is the basis for its description.
The recorded origin is Wenshan, Yunnan Province, China. Within a collection of Hemimorphite specimens, this locality gives the piece a geographical identity alongside its particular crystal habit and natural setting.
The specimen measures 17.5 × 13.5 × 8 cm, with a recorded weight of 2.360 kg. Its scale gives the natural architecture room to be appreciated as a whole, while the finer growth provides detail for closer study.
Condition: natural cavities, matrix edges, contacts and surface irregularities are present. Please examine every photograph and the video carefully; the exact specimen shown will be supplied.
Support the stable matrix or the supplied mount when moving the specimen, avoiding pressure on projecting growth. A secure indoor display allows its natural form and surface detail to be appreciated while protecting exposed crystal edges.
