Description

Hundreds of slender clear-to-milky Quartz crystals radiate across a branching natural matrix. Their fine starburst clusters surround a contrasting pale honey-coloured Calcite crystal, giving this piece sparkle and sculptural depth.

This 201 g Chinese collector specimen combines dense sprays of elongated Needle Quartz with a larger, pale honey-coloured Calcite crystal near one end. The fine crystals form overlapping starburst groups across the branching matrix. Areas of darker natural rock remain visible beneath the clear-to-milky growth, adding contrast.

Measuring 95 × 80 × 45 mm, it can be viewed from several orientations, each revealing different Quartz sprays and the Calcite focal point. It is natural and unpolished, with minor contact points consistent with a delicate mineral specimen. Handle the fine crystal tips with care.

The radiating arrangement gives the specimen a clear sense of direction. Individual crystals extend into a broader group, with their different orientations building the overall outline. The fan or spray is worth appreciating as a whole, while exposed edges and faces provide finer detail within it. This combination makes the form more interesting than a uniform crystalline surface.

The accompanying Calcite contributes a different crystal habit and surface character to the specimen. Its lighter or more translucent areas provide a contrast with the other recorded growth, allowing their separate outlines to be followed. The association is worth appreciating as a whole, with the arrangement and contact between the minerals adding detail beyond the featured crystals alone.

Quartz is silicon dioxide, a mineral whose familiar pointed crystals develop as material is added to growing faces. It occurs in many geological settings, including mineral veins and granite-related deposits. The variety of crystal lengths, orientations and degrees of transparency makes it an especially rewarding mineral to compare: pieces with the same composition can have very different natural architecture.

The glassy lustre of Quartz comes from light reflecting off its surfaces. Clear areas allow a view into the crystal, while internal fractures, veils and inclusions can scatter that light and create softer white regions. These features are distinct from the outer crystal faces. Studying both the interior and the outline adds another layer of interest beyond the familiar pointed shape.

The recorded origin is Sichuan Province, China. Within a collection of Quartz specimens, this locality gives the piece a geographical identity alongside its particular crystal habit and natural setting.

The specimen measures 95 × 80 × 45 mm, with a recorded weight of 201 g. The proportions give a useful guide to its place in a display, with the individual crystal arrangement and mineral association remaining the principal points of interest.

For display, support the stable base or the supplied mount rather than a projecting crystal. Quartz is relatively hard, but pointed ends and natural contact areas can still be damaged by an impact. Gentle handling helps preserve the arrangement that gives this individual specimen its character.
