Description
A well-composed miniature featuring multiple Smoky Quartz crystals surrounded by lustrous red-orange Spessartine Garnets on creamy Feldspar.
The composition is dominated by several well-formed Smoky Quartz crystals rising prominently from the pale matrix. A broad, sharply defined termination near the centre gives the miniature a strong focal point, while additional crystals build a compact, three-dimensional arrangement.
Numerous lustrous Spessartine Garnets are distributed across the Feldspar and between the Quartz crystals. Their colour ranges from cinnamon-orange and red-orange to deeper reddish-brown and wine-red, providing clear contrast against the translucent smoky Quartz and creamy matrix.
This combination of Spessartine Garnet, Smoky Quartz and Feldspar is characteristic of collectible Tongbei material. Although only approximately 40 mm across, the specimen has the crystal density, balance and visual complexity associated with a larger display piece.
The specimen displays attractively from several directions and is mounted on the clear bevelled base shown in the photographs.
Handling and care: Handle the specimen by its secure base or solid matrix and avoid pressure on individual crystals. Keep dry and avoid chemical cleaners.
The recorded Feldspar association is part of the natural setting of this specimen. Feldspars are a broad family of rock-forming silicates, and their texture offers a useful contrast with the featured crystals. Seeing the minerals together preserves the relationship between the main growth and its host, adding interest to the overall arrangement.
The Feldspar matrix provides a contrasting setting for the featured crystals. Its pale, finely crystallised areas help define the darker or more strongly coloured growth, while the points where the minerals meet retain the natural relationship between them. The matrix is therefore part of the appeal of this piece, giving the main crystals a setting rather than presenting them in isolation.
The accompanying Quartz brings a silicate crystal habit into the association. Its surfaces and crystal outlines contrast with the featured mineral, giving the specimen more than one kind of growth to examine. The way the minerals occupy the same piece is part of its character: the setting retains their natural relationship and adds depth to the overall display.
Garnet is a group of related silicate minerals rather than a single composition. Its familiar many-faced crystals belong to the cubic system, and different members of the group can show very different colours. Where Spessartine is recorded, the identification refers to the manganese-aluminium member. The supplied species name for this individual listing is retained rather than inferred from colour alone.
The geometry of Garnet is particularly rewarding to study in a matrix specimen. Distinct faces catch separate reflections, allowing the outline of each crystal to stand out against the surrounding material. Smaller crystals and partly embedded growth can contribute to the arrangement too. Both the exposed crystal forms and the contrast with any recorded association are important to the piece’s individual character.
The recorded origin is Tongbei, Fujian, China. Within a collection of Garnet specimens, this locality gives the piece a geographical identity alongside its particular crystal habit and natural setting.
The specimen measures 4 × 2.5 × 2 cm. The proportions give a useful guide to its place in a display, with the individual crystal arrangement and mineral association remaining the principal points of interest.
Condition: Natural contacts, surface irregularities and minor edge wear may be present. Please examine all photographs carefully; the exact natural specimen shown will be supplied.
Support the stable matrix or the supplied mount when moving the specimen, avoiding pressure on projecting growth. A secure indoor display allows its natural form and surface detail to be appreciated while protecting exposed crystal edges.
